Medalla de New York survival guide

Medalla

New York

How to be a New Yorker when you are originally from Alabama — wrong answers only. A comedy project built on deliberately terrible advice, where every wrong answer teaches the real rule by being spectacularly wrong about it. Tell newcomers to make eye contact on the subway and hold the pole with both hands, to order a bagel scooped with extra ketchup, to say hi to everyone in the elevator, to stand on the left side of the escalator, to hail a cab with a polite little wave from the curb of a one-way street going the other direction, to ask a bodega cat for permission before entering, to tip in compliments, to take a car to Manhattan on a Friday afternoon because the traffic is probably fine, to pronounce Houston Street like the city in Texas, to wait patiently for the walk signal on an empty street. The joke is never the person from Alabama, who is the hero here and usually the only kind one in the room: the joke is the city and its unwritten rules that nobody ever explains out loud. Each wrong answer should land the correct rule underneath it, so the project actually works as a survival guide while pretending to be sabotage. Include what Southern manners get right that New York quietly needs, and end on the moment a transplant stops performing New Yorker and just becomes one
